Skeleton of Siberian Mammoth Sold for $421,000 at Christie’s Auction
A skeleton of a mammoth sold for 312,000 euros ($421,000) at a Christie’s International auction in Paris, double its estimate and setting a new record.
According to Bloomberg, the buyer was a European collector who appeared to be in his mid-30’s and declined to reveal his identity.
“There were telephone bidders, there were museums, there were collectors, but there was this gentleman who was determined and just kept his hand up,” said Francois Curiel, chairman of Christie’s Europe, who led the auctioning himself.
This species was the contemporary of Neanderthal man during the mid Paleolithic Period and that of Homo sapiens during the late Paleolithic Period.
