2 Dead as Blast Hits School in Latvian Capital
A gas explosion in a cafe in a school building in the Latvian capital Riga killed two people and injured one on Monday, the DPA press agency reported on Monday quoting rescue officials.
The explosion was caused by a gas bottle in the cafe’s kitchen, Inese Veisa of the Latvian fire brigade told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa. All three victims were employees of the cafe, she added.
The cafe occupies part of the first floor of Riga’s number 3 secondary school. No school children were hurt in the blast, and the school was evacuated and the children sent home.
The school, in the centre of Riga’s historical Old Town, is for children aged 11 to 18. It has over 1,000 pupils, according to Indra Vilde, spokeswoman for Riga city council education department.
The cafe and school are under one roof, but are accessible by different entrances. The cafe does not back onto classrooms, Vilde added.
