A British citizen was among dozens of people killed in a gas explosion at a remote Siberian coal mine, Telegraph.co.uk reported March 20. Total number of victims of the deadly blast is currently 106 people, at least a dozen have not been found yet.

Early on Tuesday officials in the Kemerovo region named the dead Briton as Malcolm Robertson, an employee with the British-based mine audit firm IMC.

He was visiting the Ulyanovskaya mine to assist proprietors as they were preparing for a stock exchange listing.

Roberston and senior mine managers had just descended into the shaft on Monday morning when an explosion ripped through the mine, causing an underground fire. So powerful was the blast that most of the charred corpses brought to the surface were dismembered.

Coal mining in Russia is a notoriously dangerous job. Dilapidated Soviet-era infrastructure, scant concern for safety regulations and a shortage of equipment — workers often have to work with their bare hands — have led to numerous accidents.
