A fire in a Russian home for the elderly killed at least 63 people on Tuesday night, the Associated Press news agency reported quoting officials from the Russian Emergencies Ministry.

One person was still missing out of 97 people who were at the home in the Kuban region near the Black Sea when the fire broke out, said a regional spokeswoman for the ministry, Tatiana Kobzarenko.

63 people perished and 27 others had been taken to hospital, she said.

The cause of the fire is still unknown but it broke out at 1:11 a.m. when many of the residents were likely to be sleeping.

Kobzarenko said the fire had been put out. The home is situated more than 50 km (30 miles) from the nearest fire station.
