Lavrov Warns Against Politicizing Litvinenko Case
Russia`s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned countries involved in Litvinenko`s case investigating against “politicizing†the case Thursday, the Associated Press reports.
According to Lavrov it is in the interests of all countries involved to conduct the investigation professionally, without excessive politicizing and not to nod in the direction of some country as the most vulnerable in this situation.
Lavrov had a meeting with visiting German counterpart, Frank-Walter Steinmeier and expressed hope that the investigation would be conducted thoroughly.
A key witness in the case, Russian businessman Dmitry Kovtun has reiterated his innocence. “I have never had anything to do with polonium. I heard nothing about it and no one gave it to me,†Germany’s ZDF television has quoted him as saying. Despite of the fact he has been recently hospitalized because of radioactive poisoning.
Traces of polonium were found in Moscow, London and Hamburg where Kovtun had stopped on the way from Moscow to London in late October. German prosecutors are investigating whether Kovtun may have illegally handled radioactive material.
Russian prosecutors have also opened a criminal case of attempted murder in connection with Kovtun’s poisoning.
