Russian top prosecutor’s office has issued an official apology to a man unlawfully charged with murdering an investigative journalist Dmitry Kholodov, who was killed in a bomb blast at his newspaper’s office back in 1994, the Russian news agency RIA-Novosti reports.

The Prosecutor General’s Office of Russia apologized to army officer Konstantin Mirzayants, acquitted earlier of involvement in the plot to kill Kholodov. The statement was made by a prosecutor’s office official in a Moscow court during the hearing of Mirzayants’ complaint.

The acquitted suspect claims 10.8 million rubles in moral damages from the state.

The prosecutors urged the court to reject his claim as Mirzayants had not been acquitted of all charges brought against him.

The ruling on Mirzayants’ claim is expected Wednesday.

Dmitry Kholodov, an investigative reporter for the Moscow newspaper Moskovsky Komsomolets, was killed in a bomb blast at the newspaper’s office on Oct. 17, 1994.

Kholodov, who had been investigating mafia connections with the military, was killed when he opened a briefcase he believed contained secret documents.
