Russia Sets Deadline for Shell’s Sakhalin Project Repairs
Russia has set a deadline of February 1 for Shell’s Sakhalin-2 project to repair environmental damage or face the loss of its operating licences, the RIA Novosti news agency reported citing a Russian federal agency.
Twelve licenses permitting work upon water were suspended on environmental grounds on December 7.
The head of Russia’s Water Resources Agency Rustem Khamitov said if the violations were not resolved by February 1, the licences would be withdrawn.
Despite the necessary repair works having to be carried out during the region’s harsh winter period, Khamitov said the project has the necessary technological, financial and workforce resources.
