Russian Ex-Minister Detained Over Attempt on Energy Tycoon’s Life

Russian authorities have detained Ivan Mironov, the 25-year-old history student, who had been wanted over an assassination attempt on the head of the Unified Energy Systems of Russia joint-stock company, Anatoly Chubais, RIA Novosti news agency reported December 12. Boris Mironov, father of the detainee and former Russian Federation Press Minister has also been detained in Moscow recently.
Officers of the Moscow Prosecutor`s Office had detained Mironov and charged him in connection with the attempt on Chubais’ life, said Tatyana Ivanova, mother of the detainee. Mironov`s lawyer Viktor Vyskrebtsev has confirmed the information saying his client maintained his innocence while questioned.
Mironov is currently being held in a remand cell in the central Moscow, the case of an arrest warrant for him would be decided within two days, the lawyer said.
Boris Mironov, father of the detainee and former Russian Federation Press Minister has also been detained in Moscow recently. The Novosibirsk prosecutor’s office detained her husband on suspicion of inciting interethnic strife, Tatyana Mironova said. “As far as I know, he is to be taken to Novosibirsk shortly and charged there,†she added.
Viktor Vyskrebtsev confirmed the arrest of Boris Mironov but said he had not yet been formally charged with inciting interethnic strife.
Law enforcement agencies have not been available for comments at the time of the report.
