The Eton-educated son of a Russian oil billionaire who killed a friend in a high-speed car crash was yesterday jailed for 6,5 years, The Times online website reported.

Ivan Mazour, 22, had smoked cannabis and was three times over the drink-drive limit when he lost control of his sports car at almost 90mph, the court heard.

Charlie Green, 21, a front seat passenger, was killed instantly when Mazour’s Mitsubishi hit a lampost and careered into an oncoming vehicle in November last year.

Mazour, a student at Cambridge University, had pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving at an earlier court appearance.

Southwark Crown Court was told yesterday how Mazour could not resist showing off his powerful new sports car on the night of the fatal accident.

He had spent the evening drinking whisky and smoking cannabis with friends when they had decided to visit another night club in central London.

Mazour, the son of Ivan I. Mazour, who became an oil billionaire when Russia privatized its energy utilities, had climbed behind the wheel of his Mitsubishi Evolution VIII, which is capable of speeds of 170mph, ignoring pleas not to speed.

But in what was described as a “mad” dash, he sped at 88mph in a 30mph zone, and at the Piccadilly Underpass he lost control and slammed into a lamp post before careering into the path of an oncoming BMW, seriously injuring its six occupants.

Green, a student at the London School of Fashion, who had recently become engaged, died instantly. His fianc?e Dokie Grove, escaped with slight injuries.

Green’s mother, Jenny, told the court that her daughter had been so distressed by the death of her brother that she had attempted suicide on the anniversary of his death.
