Russia’s Defense minister has approved Topol-M mobile missile systems for use as part of the country’s Strategic Missile Forces.

Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov told Russian President Vladimir Putin that the Topol-M system, which follows an unpredictable flight path to avoid air defense systems, would form the backbone of the country’s missile program, Itar-Tass reported Monday.

The missiles, which developers claim are immune to electromagnetic impulse, carry weapons loads of 2,600 pounds and have a flight range in excess of 6,000 miles.
The Topol-M missiles have been on standby in Russia since 1997, when the country received 42 of the missile systems.
