A 500-kilovolt electricity transmission project is being considered in China’s northeastern province of Heilongjiang that will involve power supplies purchased from neighboring Russia, the official Xinhua news agency reported Thursday. The project is being considered in Harbin and is expected to transmit 4.3 billion kilowatt hours of electricity each year from Russia when it is completed in 2008, Xinhua reported, citing unnamed sources at the provincial power corporation.

Gross investment was expected to total around CNY700 million ($87.5 million), and the new grid will be directly connected with Russia’s Far East power grid, the report said.

China’s total electricity consumption exceeded 2 trillion kWh during the first three quarters of this year, Xinhua added.
