HRW Releases Report on Torture in Chechnya
Human Rights Watch has maid a report where accused Chechnya authorities of the “widespread†and “systematic†use of torture in Chechen prisons.
The 60-page study describes more than 100 cases of torture. It says detainees have been subjected to torture in both official and secret detention facilities in Chechnya.
Chechnya’s Deputy Prime Minister and Ambassador Plenipotentiary in Moscow Ziad Sabsabi has refuted HRW contention saying that the information was untrue, and if torture really had taken place, they would speak about this problem, and so would prisoners’ relatives.
HRW blames the pro-Moscow forces of Chechen Prime Minister Ramzan Kadyrov for the majority of torture cases. The organization urges the UN Committee Against Torture to send Russia a “clear message†that it must stop, punish, and prevent future acts of torture.
