EU Prolongs Sanctions Against Uzbekistan Authorities
The Europian Union has reconsidered sanctions applied on Uzbekistan after hundreds were killed in Andijan mass disorders the BBC reported on Monday.
EU foreign ministers declared their concern with the human rights situation in Uzbekistan. They say Uzbekistan has to implement fully its international obligations related to human rights and fundamental freedoms.
EU foreign ministers agreed to extend the arms ban for another 12 months and the travel ban for 12 senior Uzbek officials for another six months.
The sanction is valid except for the case of technical meetings at ministerial level. Which will allow a meeting between EU and Uzbek officials to discuss the events in Andijan, as agreed by the Uzbek Foreign Minister Vladimir Norov in talks with EU officials in Brussels last week.
According to the official statement of President Karimov 187 were killed by security forces of Andijan during the unrest provoked by Islamic militants.
