Three Russian teenagers were sentenced to brief prison terms for involvement in attacks on foreign nationals in St. Petersburg, the Interfax news agency reports.

The men were sentenced to 3.5, 3 and 2 years in prison respectively for their role in several racially motivated attacks and inciting racial hatred. Their accomplice was found guilty of an assault on a national of Azerbaijan and ordered to pay a fine of 20,000 rubles.

Altogether, 17 men were tried for their involvement in the murder of a Vietnamese student Va An Tuan on October 13, 2004. Earlier this year 14 men were acquitted after the a trial by jury ruled they were not guilty.

Following their acquittal some 200 Vietnamese students held protests in St. Petersburg. Vietnam sent a note of protest to the Russian Embassy in Hanoi on October 19.

According to the Sova Center, which monitors hate crimes, at least 20 foreign citizens have been killed in racially motivated crimes in Russia this year.
