Irina Slutskaya Retires From Competitive Skating
27-year-old Russian champion Irina Slutskaya retires from competitive skating, the Reuters news agency reported Monday.
“I’m not sure what I’m going to do in the next five minutes but one thing is certain — I’m done with competitive skating,†she said. Slutskaya wants to take a shot at television. As the first step she has already taken part in one of the popular Russian TV shows as an anchor.
During her competitive career Slutskaya has won a title of world champion twice in 2002 and 2005. Besides she was the first Russian woman who won European championship in 1996.
However there is one title she had never won. The Olympic gold at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games was awarded to American skater Sarah Hughes. A protest fielded by Russian officials was rejected and Slutskaya stayed the second what on her own showing became the biggest disappointing in her sporting career.
