Russian WBA Heavyweight Champion Wins Court Case Against U.S. Promoter
WBA heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev has won a long smoldering promotonal dispute with former promoter Joseph O’Donnell, Russian web site Lenta.ru reported on Wednesday.
O`Donnel had promoted Valuev at the very beginning of his US career in 2001 in Atlantic City. And when the boxer went back to Russia O`Donnell received a default jugement for further promotional rights.
Later in 2003 Valuev fought in Europe and joined Sauerland Event, eventually becoming the tallest and heaviest boxing world champion of all time. As O`Donnel kept laying claims to his promotional rights Saureland Event had to hire boxing lawyer Pat English who successfully had O’Donnell’s default judgment thrown out in 2004.
Last week a ruling from New Jersey Federal District Judge Jerome Simandle that the contract between O’Donnell and Valuev did not have any legal basis was finally received so the dispute is over.
