Russia Will Not “Heat Up Atmosphere” in North Korea
Participants in talks on North Korea should not take hasty steps that could inflame the situation following Pyongyang’s nuclear test, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov cautioned on Tuesday, Reuters reports.
“In Moscow, it is hoped that all participants in the negotiations will proceed from similar positions and will not undertake any steps that could heat up the atmosphere,†Lavrov said.
Moscow has urged North Korea to show maximum restraint and return to talks with South Korea, the United States, Russia, China and Japan.
North Korea has said it is willing to return to negotiations if it is not faced with international pressure, but insisted on its nuclear right. Officials have been quoted as saying that it may launch a second nuclear test.
Meanwhile, media reports on Tuesday said that South Korea has developed a cruise missile capable of reaching North Korea and beyond.
The security-sensitive South has been rattled by North Korea’s first nuclear test on October 9.
